Build: Baerefoot
Challenge challenge challenge
Of course a diorama for a challenge and again one of Romans. The keywords were “colossal” and “critters”.
Find ideas
It took time to find ideas, mainly around different scales but I forgott most of them. I bought some random H10 model train figures which have quite some potential and one idea is left on the list of possible future projects.
I decided for the idea of an invisible monster that is just announced by a hint - a foot print. While the scene, in contrast, is dominated by piece and harmony.
A happy fisherman that doesn’t seem to know anything about a big monster.
Find a Mini for the idea
It took quite some time googling and browsing through webstores to find a proper miniature. I found an amazing match from VaeVictis miniatures.
That happy guy with a big caught fish is the perfect contrast.
Next challenge was painting a footprint, and even worse find the right proportions. It should be quite big but also the mini and some environment has to fit on the chosen wooden block.
To make the critter appear massive the footprint is only partial visible. Enough to be visible and as big as possible - and a little space for some environment like that beautiful tree from epic basing.
Proper placement
The tree was a test piece for creating leaves and a perfect reuse - it just needs more leaves, but later.
The WIP images show various placements of the fisherman. This decision seems like a small thing but there are many important aspects:
- Visibility: the footprint must not be hidden by the fisherman
- Feasibility: he shouldn't walk through the water but along some path
- Visual guidance: reading direction, no center placement
For that reason chosen him to move from left to right and placed off center to the left to show the footprint. With that set, the environment should be sketches and build.
Ready to build
Some stone plates should make a path indicating that the fishermen is regularly there.the footprint is scraped into the wood with dremel and darkened again, otherwise it would be invisible on the photos (-; .
The tree is lifted up a bit, that gives a bit more 3D.
Building was quite easy beside the wood carving ( also in the front ) which is a mess. I hate to clean my workspace after such actions…
A thin milliput made the surface, stone and floor tiles were pushed in.
Lastly, gravel and roots were added as random as possible and as a fun Detail a printed frog, again from Pellinor, was put in the pond.
If you are interesetd how that thing was painted see here.
